Language theory

Postby Perry Lassiter » Thu Mar 22, 2012 1:34 pm

Came across this article in the NYTimes this morning about a linguist bucking Chomsky's theory of a hereditary grammar common to all humans. Typically the establishment scholars are rejecting this, and they have a good point in that the linguist has not published his raw data as yet. It did trigger in me my adolescent rebellion against authority which in too many fields believes they hold the key to all truth. A New Yorker article years ago stated Freud's family had refused access to some of his later papers where he challenged what became the Freudian establishment. And even in science we see tremendous resistance to those proposing new paradigms. Anyway, here's the link many of you will find teresting.

I have a play on Freud's name that expresses my opinion of this "great man". I call him Sick-man Fraud.

There has been another round in this brouhaha. Read all about it here, but be sure to read the comments at the end.

To Philip Hudson - Be sure to click on link and read comments after the article as they refer to ESL, esp Japanese.
