merry?

Postby nurseshark » Mon Apr 03, 2006 11:17 pm

I had a friend who was really into linguistics once and tried this trick on me..

say the words:
marry
mary
merry

people from different areas tend to say these words differently. where I grew up in southern virginia, these words all sounded the same, but here in philadelphia, they are all pronounced differently: mahrry, mary (with a soft a), and mehrry. anywhere else?

DC accent

In the Washingto, DC Metro area, all three would be pronounced as "murry" with the vowel pronounced very closed. This pronunciation has annoyed me ever since moving here 17 years ago from upstate New York, where all three words are pronounced differently.

All pretty much said the same in Mid-Tennessee/northern Alabama...
