Explain this word

'Votive' - the dictionary definitions seem not to help here.

It seems to be connected to special intentions. For example, a votive mass would be dedicated to a special purpose (say to pray for someone's health or for an armistice agreement). A votive candle would therefore be a candle lit by one person who is praying for someone or something.

But don't take my word for it (I'm Jewish). Let's see if any of the Catholics among us can add to our knowledge.

While our dictionary to the left of this box says: dedicated in fulfillment of a vow; "votive prayers", and one can see a relationship to devotion, I don't remember ever hearing this word as a Catholic. I do remember hearing it as a candle customer, that was about it.

Then again I didn't get as deep into it as I could've. I was actually going to be an altar boy until someone pointed out what the term would look like in past tense...

Well I saw an example wherein the context was seeking something, 'a votive prayer'.

Perhaps the definition of votary will help?
And a more poetic description is here.

I'm still hoping to see someone alter the maker's mark on one of these vehicles to read Ahura Mazda.
