irenic

Postby M. Henri Day » Thu Apr 28, 2005 12:20 pm

This little-used word ought to be more widely known, just as it should more often characterise the policies, both public and private, which we adopt. The AHD defines it thusly :
i·ren·ic [...] also i·ren·i·cal [...]

adj.

Promoting peace; conciliatory.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Greek eirênikos, from eirênê, peace.]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i·reni·cal·ly adv.
«Blessed are the Peacemakers.»

eye-RE-nik? eye-REE-nik? I'm familiar with the word but I don't know its pronunciation (I would tend towards the first). I know Irene is eye-REEN, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the derivative should be pronounced the same (especially in English. Crazy language! )

You say tomatoes, I guess [eire:ne:] (classical pronunciation; I suppose Astrokatastro would have it [iri:ni])

Kinda special to me, 'cos I've known one wonderful Irena (Latvian) and one quite detestable but fascinating Irina [Swedish!)

We have Irene's and Irina's in Brazil, but that's easy, you just pronounce it the way it's spelled, so that doesn't help me at all.

Any relation to siren...? You know, the ancient Greek myth states that the Sirens lured sailors to their doom, so it would make sense that the sound they made was inviting rather than alarming (which is what we associate with sirens today).

Hmm..

According to Merriam Webster, I can say it any way I like.

I always cannot but make fun/pun out of irenic with ironic. It's an irenic era when one can be ironic.
