I guess it's a matter of choice. I have a friend from China whose name is Peixin. She says Peyk-sing (or something close). Everyone else, including her hubby, calls her Peyzhin.
Likewise, there is a small town near me called Clinton. The Clinton-born folks say Clinnon, while everyone else pronounces it the way Bill and Hillary do.
And what do you do with Peru, which is pronounced Pe-du in Peru?
