Supernal

Postby Audiendus » Sun Sep 26, 2010 4:23 pm

Supernal (adjective)

1. Divine, heavenly, celestial, spiritual.
2. On high, in the sky, or coming from the sky.

Examples:
They thanked God for his supernal blessings.
There is a supernal aspect to human existence.
The ancient astronomers considered with awe the supernal harmony of the night sky.
The stars throw down their supernal rays.

Antonym: infernal.

[From Latin supernus, on high; from super, above.]

Latin super, Greek hyper, German über and English over are all ultimately derived from Indo-European uper (= over).

Our Father, who art supernal...
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from things infernal.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

Give us this day our bread diurnal.

(And don't quote that in the "Galore" thread!)
