1. to wipe out; do away with; expunge: to efface one's unhappy memories.

2. to rub out, erase, or obliterate (outlines, traces, inscriptions, etc.).

3. to make (oneself) inconspicuous; withdraw (oneself) modestly or shyly.

"I did not mean anything, I was only joking," he said, smiling shyly and trying to efface his offense.

I had an obscure feeling that all was not over and that he would still commit some signal crime, which by its enormity should almost efface the recollection of the past.

Lady Arabella tried to efface herself behind the now open door.
Whoever wants to know something about me - as an artist which alone is significant - they should look attentively at my pictures and there seek to recognise what I am and what I want.
