arbitrage

Postby Klimt » Tue Nov 30, 2010 7:51 pm

[ahr-bi-trahzh]

The purchase of securities on one market for immediate resale on another market in order to profit from a price discrepancy.

The arbitrage refers to oil product flows such as jet fuel and diesel mainly to Europe when prices in the East lag those in the West.

Although risk arbitrage has dominated headlines, it is far from the only form of arbitrage. Indeed, there is potential for arbitrage wherever there is a potential for markets to set different values for the same security...

So, how did we get from arbitration to a financial maneuver?
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

Arbitrage and arbitration both involve judgment of some kind (Latin arbitrari, to give judgment). It is interesting, however, that "arbitrary" tends to mean the opposite, i.e. a matter of whim rather than judgment.
