Velleity

Postby LukeJavan8 » Thu Oct 27, 2011 11:26 am

Velleity
Curious to me: low in passion, I guess. I looked it up,
and found the Latin, but just wondering about its
development.

Great word, Luke. Wherever did you find it?

I admit I'm having troubles figuring out how to use it. Would this work:

A group is trying to decide what to do. Someone says, "Hey, Slava, you suggested X." The response, "Well, that was really just a velleity."
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

What are the nuances? Similar to apathy or soporifific? Passion brings to mind sex unless the context indicates something else, like "his passion was Chopin." Dictionary give sentences for usage?

I am not quite sure how to use it either, and probably
would not very often. I was reading a newsmagazine
story and the sentence was: "I do have some
velleity to continue this conversation elsewhere". It is
probably from the Latin "velle" to "wish", but I have
not had the velleity to look it up (yuk). Just a word
for discussion since we seem to have a good group
of people on this site discussing lots of good stuff.

Found in Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary that they have a comments section. In that section there are several excellent examples of this word's use.

Yes, I've seen that. Still curious word to me.
