stenography

Postby M. Henri Day » Fri Jun 24, 2005 1:24 pm

Remember this word ? For obvious reasons it seems to be on its way out of the living vocabulary - but perhaps we should remember it as a predecessor to current expressions which use space as a metaphor for time :

"shorthand," 1602, from Gk. stenos "narrow" (of unknown origin) + graphos "writing." Stenographer first recorded 1809.
It was Katy talking (What ! a fused participle ! How dare he !) about purchasing «bandwidth» for her 188 (sic !) websites that inspired me here - speed writing is called «stenography» which literally means writing narrowly, but over the net, the broader the band, the faster transmission is. Go figure it !...

Well, as slowly as I type I have to buy broadband, it's cheap but it's not free!
