macedoine

Postby LukeJavan8 » Sun May 20, 2012 1:04 pm

In a local grocery store: an advertisement for
a salad: macedoine. Curiously I suppose it
comes from the country of Macedonia, but must
have a long history to be used in a USA heartland
grocery adv.

Wikipedia has an interesting discussion of the word as a fruit or vegetable salad, usually served cold, and including diced ingredients.

Thanks, I had never heard the word, and didn't know the related word was more than a country.

Macedonia is a country that was part of Yugoslavia. It is also a region in Northern Greece. Philipi was the capital of the Roman colony of Macedonia. The Apostle Paul went there instead of going to Bythinia because of a dream he had. In Christian litereature, A Macedonoan Call is a belief that a person has been called by God to be a missionary.

Thanks to you both.
I knew about Alexander, as a high school teacher, formerly.
And his father Phillip of Macedon. And the Greek
anger over the modern state, especially when the
country's athletes enter the Olympic stadium, they
must come under "F" instead of "M" as the
"Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia": dumb, but
they are worried about claims to their province.
But I had not heard about the salad either. Thanks
for the input.
