Group Poem XIII

Postby saparris » Wed Aug 15, 2012 10:57 am

With Group Poem XIII, we will honor the 2012 Olympic Games, held with much pomp in the City of Audiendus (aka London). Here are the rules:

The poem will consist of 5 stanzas, one for each of the rings in the Olympic logo, of four lines each—all written in iambic heptameter. Iambic heptameter has seven stressed syllables, each preceded by an unstressed one. (e.g., u s u s u s u s u s u s u s). The rhyme scheme will be ABAB CDCD, EFEF, GHGH, IJIJ for the twenty lines in the poem.

Half rhymes (like rest and east) are acceptable if you get stuck or if it makes the line make sense, and a little fudging on the iambic rule will be OK, but the lines should still contain five stressed syllables.

The poem is ostensibly a love poem, written as a conversation between two lovers, with the first four stanzas alternating voices (he, she, he, she, he), and the last one spoken by the two (they). In addition, each line must contain at least one word relating to the Olympics (e.g. hurdle, marathon, etc.). I envision the result to be similar a passage from to the Song of Solomon, except humorous--and perhaps a bit sweatier.

Copy and paste the full poem into your post before adding a line. Then bold the word(s) in each line referring to the games. For clarity, put [He], [She], or [They] in brackets before each new stanza,

The title and first line are as follows.

Love, Olympic Style

[He]
Your eyes are like the stars, my love, or an Olympic flame

But where on earth did you acquire a male weightlifter's frame?
