Am I missing something, or does this post have no meaning? Was there supposed to be more that got skipped, perhaps?

Helas, I think is a Spanish interjection, maybe. Monika, please elucidate.

Doesn't it have the same or equivalent meaning as "perish"?

"Hélas!" is French for "Alas!"

There is an expression "Perish the thought", but it doesn't mean quite the same as "alas".

Monika, I think Audiendus got what I was trying to remember. I tried helas on babelfish with a couple of languages, as well as perish, but couldn't find the correspondence. How did it come up?
