Macho

Postby KatyBr » Sat Jul 09, 2005 2:15 pm

Macho used to be the word of the day every day all through the 80's, it was an insult (often)....it's not heard so much anymore, the current metro-sexual is not the macho type.
ma·cho (mä'chō)
adj.
Characterized or motivated by machismo: “He was a mindless activist, a war lover, who found macho relish in danger and felt driven to prove manhood by confrontation” (Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.).

n., pl. -chos.
Machismo.
A person characterized by or exhibiting machismo.
[Spanish, male, from Latin masculus. See masculine.]

ma'cho·ism n.

Thesaurus
macho

adjective

Of, characteristic of, or befitting the male sex: male, manful, manlike, manly, mannish, masculine, virile. See gender. from: www.answers.com

The only way I can contribute to this is by saying that macho is also a Portuguese word, but we pronounce ch like French ch (or English sh - Andalusian and Chilean ch sound like a Portuguese ch to me too, not like "standard" Spanish), hence MAH-shoo and mah-SHEEZ-moo. Unstressed o's at the end of words sound almost like the oo in the word book.

And what caused the big bang? Was the bang followed by the considerable crunch? Do MACHOs make up much of the universe, or are WIMPs really the ruling class?

In Spanish, it depends a lot on the level of education. The lower the level, the more like sh.

Of course Macho has more meaning in Spanish, it is a Spanish word.

I am probably referring to how it is used in English.

I know that is a Spanish word, but I was surprised by the fact that English took only one of the meanings.

Are you saying that English borrowed it from Portuguese, BD?

Anyway, there is nothing "macho" about "masho?"

BD, English borrowed Macho from Spanish not from Portuguese. Both languages got it from Latin. Have a cup of some herbal tea and relax. :)

Just trying to keep up your tradition of ruthless scrutiny, BD!

(A smiley would probably be appropriate here, but that would take the edge off it.)
