Appropriate

Postby Slava » Thu Feb 07, 2013 9:47 pm

A nice word, if I do say so myself. Depending on its pronunciation, it has seemingly different meanings, though both boil down to the same root.

I'm sure we already know the meanings, but perhaps the Doc might be able to find something interesting to add. Or maybe other Agorans would care to chime in?

The dictionaries seem to have only one pronunciation. I have two. The verb means to take something, the adjective means its modifier is the right thing to do or to take. I say verb: a-PRO-pri-ATE, with the secondary emphasis on ATE. I say the adjective: a-PRO-pri-uht, where "uh" is my alphabet-only pronunciation symbol for a schwa.

I guess we have different dictionaries (fancy that). Mine have two pronunciations.

All my paper dictionaries say the same. Have not checked
the online ones.
