Are you referring to topographical maps? (That link is to the "US Topo Quadrangles — Maps for America" site.) I'm not a surveyor but I need to generate one of these once in awhile, or work with sections of one for clients. Topographical maps contain a great deal of detailed information, some of which can be turned on or off for the user's need.

Creating topographical maps was once a laborious task. In my short tenure as a surveyor, I had to do some topographical leg work. One of my associates did his topographical work in head-hunter infested jungles. I labored on the open and arid plains of Texas.

Topographical maps can now be generated using GPS data. In my later tenure as a GPS engineer, I helped obviate my previous work as a surveyor.
It is dark at night, but the Sun will come up and then we can see.
