I saw this one in a bit about the gap in the Papacy. I always simply thought of it as a gap, a pause. Having now looked it up, I understand that it is a space of time between reigns.
Just think how many interregna we have here in the US, with many positions blocked by Congress these days.
Corporations might also see an interregnum in leadership, while the board decides who is to be the new leader.
Revolutions often also lead to such gaps.

The technical term the Vatican uses is sede vacante, translated as vacant see. There are fixed rules, traditions, and rituals for this period, which they hope will bef short this year to enable the church's worldwide emphasis during Holy Week and Easter.
