monograph

Postby Audiendus » Sun Mar 03, 2013 5:34 pm

Monograph (noun)
A book, paper, essay or treatise on a specific, narrow subject.
[From mono-, one; -graph, something written.]

"The historian grew tired of writing scholarly monographs on obscure aspects of ancient civilization, and decided to write a general history of the world."

"The musicologist produced monographs about female bandleaders, German jazz, and the development of drumsticks."

Not to be confused with monogram.

So reading a monograph aloud could be a singularly boring monologue? (snicker)

Hmm, singularly boring, or simply monotonous?
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

I'm not sur how Sherlock found the time to do any detecting, as he seems to have produced a plethora of monographs. Seems few stories go by without his modestly mentioning one.
