Coincidences?

Postby Perry Lassiter » Thu Apr 25, 2013 8:25 pm

I was watching a CNN interview with an amputee today, and the announcer interrupted her. He caught himself and apologized, "I'm sorry I cut you off."

As a pastoral counselor I have often noted the choice of words unconsciously fits the situation like a pun or a Tom Swifty. Anyone remember the psychological term for this?

I do not know any word for this, but here is another one I came across a few years ago:

Speaking of a stay of execution: "It's a good sign, but of course it could be short-lived," Edwards said.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

In honor of Tom Swift and his Swifties, and according to the "rule" that all psychological phrases can only be expressed in German, I nominate Tomasschnelligkeit, a word I just cobbled together, to mean whatever we are talking about.

And in the true German spirit of jamming together words to make a new one, an effort I call "box-car" words.
