Slava: An interesting and informative reference. While modern English, even middle English, did come from a layer of French words over a basically Germanic language, the idea that this was a Norman French infusion is highly disputed by some linguists, Charlton Laird for example. A listing of French words as they came into the English language, seems to indicate the fusion postdates the Norman rule of England and comes from a more standard French.
It is dark at night, but the Sun will come up and then we can see.
