self-effacing

You rarely see "ruth" without "less". I have never seen "effacing" without "self-" in front of it. Is there an "other-effacing"?

Well, yeah. Coins are effaced by wear, which is passive, so a criminal can efface the serial number on a gun though forensic labs can restore it. I would suspect one could efface the effects of sunburn by applying makeup. Then, one of the first signs of impending birth is the effacement of the birth canal.
