Okay, I am trying to keep an open mind about his. Latin had "specere", which meant to look at, behold, to see. I think I understand the transition to SPECIOUS, as a specious argument originally looks good, but I am danged if I can understand how to get from "specere" to species.

In the Roman Catholic Mass, the bread and wine are called the Eucharistic species. For years only the priest took the wine giving each communicant the bread. Now it can be either way. Most Christian churches give bread and wine to the communicants during communion. The Salvation Army (Yes it is a Christian Denomination) for some reason has no ordinances or sacraments.
