per se

Postby William Hupy » Tue Aug 27, 2013 9:45 am

I suspect that this Latin phrase is overused, misused and abused. I would like to assign everyone a quota of certain words. In this scheme a person will be permitted to use "literally" only once a day, "hopefully" twice, "absolutely" three times and "like" NEVER!

That is a very 'fun' regulation. I support its legislation.

While I agree with the "legislation" proposal, I must say I don't recall seeing per se all that often.

Per se was first put forward here over 6 years ago. It obviously didn't get very far. I wonder if it stands a chance now.

Absolutely, I hopefully declare I never use any of these words per se more than once a day and most days absolutely not at all...hopefully.

I suppose we could pass legislation that levied a fine for saying certain words or phrases more than a stated number of times a day. When I was in high school a small group of us wastrels each chose a specific word or phrase that the teacher was wont to say. Then we would count the times he said each of them that day and the one who chose the most used phrase of the day was the winner. It beat listening to "Civics" lectures, whatever those were.

I absolutely don't wish to dissipate anyone's visions of a dystopian, pedant-ruled planet where quotas are, like, literally imposed on the hapless inhabitants, but it sounds literally heinous.

Unless of course I'm dishing out the licences - that sounds like it might be fun, hopefully.

And hopefully getting paid for the issuances.

Philip, in our dystopian schools, how could you be certain the winner was truthful in his reported numbers? After all, no one else was counting his words.
