Primary

A fairly simple word, but what I'd like to learn is when this adjective/noun became a verb. :?:
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

Haven't encountered it that way. Can you give an example?

It's been used in the news a lot lately. Usually of more conservative Republicans going up against the incumbent Republican. The challenger is said to "primary" the incumbent.

It sounds like Tea Party talk. The Tea Party candidate hopes to win the primary Republican election and thus be the Republican candidate in the general election. Someone named Ted Cruz did just that in the past Texas senatorial election, much to our shame. I can't say that the word as a verb impresses me. But then the Tea Party doesn't impress me. I don't usually talk politics on the Agora, but I am going to hazard a prediction. As long as the Tea Party exists we will not have another Republican president. We have had some great Republican presidents in the distant past. Teddy Roosevelt was my kind of president.
It is dark at night, but the Sun will come up and then we can see.
