Boxing Day

Postby Grogie » Tue Nov 22, 2005 4:02 pm

With the Christmas holidays at hand, I was in the mood to offer a Christmas-related word. This refers to a holiday that is celebrated on December 26th in Great Britain. Members of the public give a Christmas ''box''(gift) as a sign of appreciation to a person(such as a postman) who has served them all year. In addition to Great Britain, I know the holiday is celebrated in Canada. I,m guessing it,s celebrated in the other Commonwealth countries as well.

I'm baffled. Grogie actually speaks! I thought he was a computer-generated poster.

. . . Members of the public give a Christmas ''box''(gift) as a sign of appreciation to a person(such as a postman) who has served them all year. . . . .
And here all along I though it was because they packed up their unwanted gifts in boxes and took them back to the store to exchange them!

Oh. Right. That's here!

Wasn't regifting (even if the late Professor Tolkien, for obvious reasons, never used the word) one of the most important themes in the social life of the hobbits ?...

Henri

PS : Gailr, has the phrase «not to know squat» now been supplanted by «not to squat» ? Brevity may very well be the soul of wit, but still...

I thought it was giving away your old stuff to your servants when you... say, get a new pair of gloves...

Ha ha ha, Henri! And thanks Katy, for adding the omitted word. I am quite amused when others post a faux pas; thus generating the karma of being hoist by my own petard...so to speak... Perhaps I had best leave americanisms to those who use them correctly, B_Dude. :D

A present for all - and on the «box» on one's own desk (or lap, as the case may be) !...
