Bubbaese for "Uvula"

Postby Dr. Goodword » Thu Dec 15, 2005 12:02 am

If you open your mouth wide, you can see a little punching bag hanging from the top of your throat, way back in your mouth. The medical term is "uvula". However, many Southern dialects have a word for it. Does anyone know what it is?

I don't know why, but I always mistake the uvula for the vulva.

Sunny: repeat after me:

WHEN DRINKING COFFEE, I WILL AVERT MY EYES FROM THE SCREEN UNTIL I HAVE SWALLOWED MY COFFEE AND PUT DOWN MY MUG. ONLY THEN WILL I READ POSTINGS ON THE ALPHA AGORA.

BD, all I can say is that, even though you don't normally see either of them, there is a world of difference between the two . . .

In Japanese, though I avoid it, the most common term for uvula translates into throat- eehh,, male counterpart of what BD mentioned.

That works too, I suppose, but in this case it was "you don't" in the sense of "one doesn't."

Interesting... I never heard an accepted slang for it before, but I did a quick Google search and came up with "glucker"...

I always called it "that hangy-thing" before I knew the real name for it. Evidently the real name comes from Latin uva, "grape", by the way...

Really? That's cool. I never associated uvula with uva, and we use the same two words in Portuguese. How can I be so stupid?

Thank you, Tim.

GOOZLE

Postby Dr. Goodword » Tue Jan 24, 2006 12:54 am

Everyone in North and South Carolina knows that that little thing is called a "goozle". It is probably known as that elsewhere in the South, too. You have to speak Bubbaese to know this word.
