Conversely, one could say that Patton got it right:
Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria miles alius mori

It is sweet and fitting for the other soldier to die for his country.

[Stargzer waits for BD to correct his Latin :) ]
If BD - or perhaps Garzo - will pardon me for rushing in where he/they might fear to tread, I think Patton's thought might be better expressed thusly :
Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria sua mileti alio fecere mori
I gladly accept correction - but hopefully one not quite as severe as that proposed by General Patton....

But remember what Patton (allegedly) said :
... making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.
I e, it's not merely that the «other poor dumb bastard» dies, but that «we» (the good guys, of course) make him die for his country. BD's translation reflects Larry's statement, but hardly Patton's thinking....

I don't know squat about Patton's thinking, but your rendition is not correct either. What did the guy say, first of all?

You're not paying attention in class, again, BD ! A number of postings ago, Larry cited the dear sweet general thusly :
Now I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.
I'm interested in hearing your Latin version....

Nunc volo ut memineritis nullum bastardum bellum vicisse moriendo pro patria. Vinxit faciendo alterum pauperem stultum bastardum mori pro patria ejus.

Just an old sweet song - but not, perhaps, quite the one of which you're thinking !...

As good a reason as any - and better than some - for calling the whole thing off....
