OK, so I see I'm the only one to have voted yet... My 'gut' pronunciation is to make the 'ch' hard, and to pronounce the syllable 'chi' more like 'ih' than a schwa.

I'll vote on behalf of my Canadian brother-in-law, who believes: "you say 'arkipelago', but "some Americans" will say 'archipelago' and many others will say 'what's that?'".

I still will always pronounce it more like 'ih'. Now who's being the spoiler? ;)

I mean, I guess some people pronounce 'architect' [är'-kə-tĕkt], too... But I don't!

Interestingly, the 'official' pronunciation of that word is [är'-kĭ-tĕkt]...!

So, Tim, are you confessing it's you who voted for "none of the above"?

I just cast a NOTA vote since, at least in my schooling I remember hearing a double accent on 1 and 4 rather than 1 and 3, and the 4 was pronounced "lay" with a hard ch (ARK-ih-puh-LAÝ-go).

I have heard the 1/3 accent often, and I usually think of it as a Britishism.

Archi-bishop?

Do we call the inventor of the famous Bathtub Principle* Archie Medes? Nope. Is Jesus surrounded by Arch Angels? I certainly hope not.

For the record, it's arK-uh-PEH-luh-go in my book.
