Maybe one would have done it. What do you think? _________________ •The Good Dr. Goodword |

Isn't wingnut a rather old accepted word? (or at least been around during my time.) _________________ "A government big enough to give you everything you want, is big enough to take away everything you have."--Thomas Jefferson |

My favorites GoodWords this year:
obfuscate
Chthonic ( It reminds me of Lovecraftian word Cthulhu : pronunciation "Khlûl'hloo" the vague interdimensional kraken-like beast.) |

One word that I hope will appear on such a list in the near future is "Eurabia," which I believe was coined by columnist Mark Steyn (or at least he put it into circulation most recently). It describes the European continent once Islamic immigration changes it beyond recognition. Perhaps if the word was better known, more people would be aware of the effects of the current "clash of civilizations" taking place all over the globe, but in Europe especially. _________________ "Good and ill have not changed since yesteryear." --J.R.R. Hmmm...possible missed opportunity to nominate x-post?
I'll have to stand by truthiness.

We generally look for a newsworthy word, a word that emerges and stands out in the news and/or in what people in the English-speaking world have talked about the most. We leave cuteness to M-W though we will offer the top 10 cute words as a secondary list for our news release this year. _________________ •The Good Dr. Goodword |

Yeah, to my eye most of these words are rather wizened veterans.

FWIW, Stephen Colbert had a little victory celebration last night: "Truthiness is Merriam-Webster's 2006 Word of the Year". He also solemnly urged the nation not to tip-in his downloadable "corrected" M-W page at their local libraries and schools. Not only right-thinking, he's tough on crime.
PS: don't click on the link if you have dial-up; it's a full-size, high-res page scan. Hmmm...none of the other fine Word suggestions are generating this kind of cable television excitement. Oh well, back to an actual book...

I did think "truthiness" had its moment last year, but what about its lesser-appreciated sibling, superstantial? _________________ Stop! Murder us not, tonsured rumpots! |

Bailout -- I read someplace it hasn't been used in the current sense for long at all. In some ways, current usage is quite different from the historical use. In the past, bail out meant to escape an dangerous/untenable situation -- bail out of a burning plane -- now it refers to the effort to make the plane airworthy again by spending money on it. _________________ bnjtokyo |

Good point B. Also to bail someone out of jail- either way, as recently used not much of a huge confidence-inspirer (can we say conspirer for short?) _________________ Stop! Murder us not, tonsured rumpots! |
