Inadvertent deletion of draught postings

I find it rather frustrating when, after having logged in to the Agora and skriven [Mea culpa, etc ! «Written», of course, was the word intended here ! The reason the Swedish verbal adjective (in the real case) appears here instead of the supinum - see BD's response, infra, has to do with the history of the writing of the message. Usually I manage to catch such lapses, but today my proof-reader failed. It obviously needs a severe talking to....] the draught of a reply or a posting on a new topic, my draught disappears into the electronic void when I try to preview or send it, at the same time that a demand appears on the screen for me to log in again. This has happened to me several times, with deleterious effects, I am sure, on my systolic blood pressure - good thing I don't trust doctors and never go for a check-up ! I have no difficulty with a request for log-in renewal after a certain amount of time has gone by, but it should be possible for this request to be made at the time the «reply» or the «new topic» button is pressed, or, in the event that the time used in draughting the posting has exceeded the limit for remaining logged in, to at least preserve the draught, so that it can be sent after the log-in procedure is completed. As the situation is now, one cannot recover the draught even by pressing the «back» button, as doing so merely leads to a new request to log in. Of course, the problem can be eliminated by copying the draught before attempting to send it, but it is not always that forgetful persons like myself remember to do so, and besides, IMHO, such measures should not be necessary. Help, Andrew !

Everytime I see draft spelled like draught, I think of wind (and tend to mentally pronounce it as drawt). How weird is that?

Skriven is a nice Swedishism. Shouldn't it be skrivit, though?

I've encountered similar phenomena, when, when writing, a long and carefully researched post just disappears (but w/o request for a new log-in). I think it may be a case of involuntary hitting a keyboard shortcut involving my/your left hand.

... I think it may be a case of involuntary hitting a keyboard shortcut involving my/your left hand.
I don't think that explains the phenomenon I took up, Anders, as the disappearance has always been accompanied by the log-in request. What makes it especially irritating is the little note below the postings, saying
You can post new topics in this forum
You can reply to topics in this forum
...
When I'm told I can, but I can't, I tend to get ticked off....

PS : Usually, in such cases it's better not to ask !...[/quote]

No, I think of naught but the phrase for the late 60's and early 70's:
Draught beer, not students!

My sentiments, exactly - only I should insert «people» in the place of «students» !...

Are any of you on AOL?

I've read that because of AOL's system of WWW proxy servers, phpBB posts can get lost in a manner similar to how you are describing. So, if you're on AOL and losing posts, let me know and I can work on tracking down the problem further.

I have to say, I think it would be too funny if Henri's using AOL.

-Tim
...what if it's the Swedish subsidiary? Sweden On-Line... SOL! That's what we say here in the US about folks who use AOL too...

Henri,

I truly sympathize! It is very irritating to loose a long post that one has put alot of thought and time into!

That hasn't happen to me here, but it did at another (unmentioned) forum.

I took your advice, then and anytime I think that I am going to need time and space to think out and say what I want, I use my Word program and then paste it into the forum.

Of course this does mean that one must write in all the {quote}{/quote}'s and {url}{/url}'s oneself, but that is so much less of a trauma than losing a wonderfully constructed tome.

I cringe to think of all those bits of insight and eloquence that we here have missed from you, because of this hideous glitch.

Deepest sympathy,

Apo

I had a similar experience recently, in the relic thread Astro asked if he might be a Greek Barbarian, I replied that he might be a Greek Antiquarian, and I wrote some other stuff, it was posted, I saw it on the thread, and then it vanished.....

Apo, your heart-felt sympathy more than assuages my wounds - but is it possible that you are here confusing an ironic mode of speech with an irenic ditto ? In any event, in missing my random thoughts on the proposed EU constitution, you have not, I dare suggest, missed anything the want of which is likely to trouble you....

Tim, I don't really know just who the internet provider to the hospital here in Fredrikstad is, but I do feel confident in drawing the conclusion that it is not AOL. There is, in fact, a Swedish firm called SOL which does provide internet access via its cabel TV network, but from what I understand its services are not to be recommended. In any event, given that the hospital is located in Norway, I doubt that SOL is involved, either. What is happening, it seems to me, is that the period I am permitted to remain logged in to the Agora comes to an end before I manage to send my magnum opus off, leading to the automatic disappearance of the latter when, in attempting to dispatch it, I am requested to log in again. As a naive believer in technical fixes for just about everything, I am convinced there must be one for this problem as well. Could I ask our ashaffer to look into this matter once again ?...

Henri

PS : Apo, the problems you mention with having to write in [ quote ], [ /quote ], etc, can easily be obviated by composing the posting on the forum, but it is then necessary to remember to copy it before attempting to send it, if unpleasant surprises are to be avoided. The problem is that my shrinking brain - I can feel the ventricles increasing in volume by the day - doesn't always remember to make this practise SOP....

Henri, you mentioned that your session gets timed-out before you complete your posts. Perhaps you could use the "Log me on automatically each visit" checkbox. This allows you to log in to the Agora simply by accessing the page or doing some operation in the site. Don't worry, this functionality, as explained somewhere in the Agora, does not keep you logged in ad infinitum. If your session is dormant for 5 minutes (or so I remember), the system regard your session as terminated.

Ouch, Henri... "the period I am permitted to remain logged in"... That doesn't sound good.

OK, Henri, I did another test.

I'm using Firefox, so this was easy, what with the multiple tabs and all.

I opened another tab with the Agora in it.

I composed my previous message of consolation in the first tab, then switched to the second tab and logged out of the forum (before clicking the submit button in the first tab).

Then I switched back to the first tab and clicked submit, at which point the forum software told me I was not logged in.

Then I switched back to the second tab, just for giggles, and logged back in, and switched back to the first tab.

Then I clicked the 'back' button, and to my surprise, my post was there, right before my eyes!, waiting for me to click submit again.

When I clicked submit, the post went right on through.

Maybe you should try that approach the next time the system is discombobulated. (It should work just as well with multiple windows.)

Dearest Henri,

I feel that you should have taken me a bit more seriously. I was not speaking at a religio-politcal level, nor even in some tragicomical sense!

I was just lamenting my own position, which, with your seeming tragedy, did not allow any rebuttal!

Surely you must understand that, fool or not, I enjoy our
dispute. It does help knowing that I am almost surely right!

Adorado enemigo,

Apo

AMANTE BANDIDO

Yo sere el viento que va
navegare por tu oscuridad
tu rocio
beso frio
que me quemara.
Yo sere tormento y amor
tu la marea que arrastra a los dos
yo y tu
tu y yo
no diras que no...
no diras que no...
no diras que no...
Sere tu amante bandido (bandido)
corazon, corazon malherido
sere tu amante cautivo (cautivo)
sere ahum!
pasion privada adorado enemigo
huracan, huracan abatido
me perdere en un momento contigo
por siempre...
Yo sere un hombre por ti
renunciare a se lo que fui
yo y tu
tu y yo
sin misterio...
sin misterio...
sin misterio...
Sere tu amante bandido (bandido)
corazon, corazon malherido
sere tu amante cautivo (cautivo)
sere ahum!
pasion privada adorado enemigo
huracan, huracan abatido
me perdere en un momento contigo
por siempre...
