Niveaulimbo.
A newish term referring to the "limbo level" for the
ever-decreasing quality of TV programming; or the
decline in the value of conversation at parties.

Isn't this German youth slang?

For good old American speech I'll stick with LCD - lowest common denominator, and "dumbing down."

I've always found this use of "lowest common denominator" inappropriate. It wrongly implies that there is a higher common denominator (i.e. a higher level that everyone can reach), when there isn't.

Yes, there is a bit of redundancy there. The "lowest" may be there for pejorative reasons.

If we're talking US TV, I believe there is a higher common denominator, it's just that the lowest is the one that rakes in the big bucks, leaving the HCD for PBS and such.
