New Words for August

Postby Dr. Goodword » Fri Jul 29, 2005 11:25 am

Here is the list of Good Words we will be working on for August through the first week in September. As usual, I appreciate the contribution of the breadth and depth of your knowledge of words in putting it together.

From August 19-September 6 I will be cruising around the British Isles, hitting the major ports close to Scotch and Irish distillleries, and a few places in England. I hope to have all the words in the hopper before departure.

Any help you would like to offer in working up these Good Words, especially on how these words are used in non-US English-speaking countries, will be greatly appreciated. I will be using Larry Brady's Suggested Usage sentence for "dearth". If you can think of any good examples, they will be acknowledged.

August 7th is International Friendship Day.

Just thought I'd share that with all my Internet friends here.

Is that any relation to National Brotherhood Week?

It is told that a Swedish sports team was visiting the US some years ago. When they heard that it was National Swedish Week, they were very flattered. Until they learned that the follwing week was National Salad and Salad Dressing Week.

And it's amazing how many of Mr. Lehrer's satires that are applicable today.

Lucky for them they didn't come a week later! :D

La plus ça change . . .

But on the other hand, many of his songs, at least from That Was The Year That Was, are a mini-history of the early 1960s.
