A gemstone is the naturally occurring crystalline form of a mineral, which is desirable for its characteristics - beauty, rarity and stability. According to Vedic astrology, gemstones are suggested on the basis of one's horoscope. There are various superstitions that surround the gemstones. It is believed that by wearing these prescribed gemstones one can triumph over the obstacles in their relationships in life and can lead a pleasing life ahead.Gemstones are either worn as amulets, in jewelry, or simply carried loose.
Gems are classified into two types: Hot and Cold. Ruby, Red coral, Diamond and Cat's eye are hot gems whereas Pearl, Topaz, Blue Sapphire and Gomed are the Cold ones.
Gemstone quality and value are assessed according to the "four Cs": color, clarity, cut, and carat weight.
Gemstone Varieties
The Traditional gemstones are ruby, emerald and blue sapphire. Because of their eternal appeal and illustrious history, ruby, emerald and sapphire are more precious than other colored gemstones, ruby and emerald being highly prized in comparison to sapphire due to rarity.
The New classics are gemstones that are the mounting stars of gemstone jewelry like tanzanite, tourmaline, aquamarine, imperial topaz, and tsavorite garnet. These gemstones are available in standardized sizes.
The Connoisseur gems are gemstones that have a more focused market because they are rarer. These include black opal, jadeite, pink topaz, chrysoberyl cat's-eye, fancy colored sapphires, and rare stones like demantoid garnet and alexandrite and are thus highly prized.
The Collector's gems are not available in quantity to be marketed effectively. This category includes spinel, zircon, moonstone, morganite and other beryls, and many rare gemstones.
The Affordable gemstones, which combine great color with an amazingly rational price and good accessibility include some old favorites and some new gems: amethyst, white opal, citrine, ametrine, peridot, rhodolite garnet, blue topaz, iolite, chrome diopside, kunzite, andalusite, and many ornamental gemstones such as lapis lazuli, turquoise, onyx, chrysoprase, nephrite jade, and amber.
Vedic Gemstones
According to Vedic astrology, nine main gemstones are associated with nine planets.
