Ruby: A Precious Gem
Ruby is valued as a precious gem red in color. Its name originated from the Latin language where rubber means red. Ruby is one of the four precious gemstones along with the diamonds, Emeralds and the Sapphires. Ruby is one of the hardest natural gemstones. It belongs to the family of minerals called Corundum.
A ruby that has been cut and polished is worth more than diamonds. The first ruby was created on 1890?s, from then it became more popular as a jewel. Ruby is one of the rarest jewels and most valuable of all gemstones.
The person who creates a jewel from the ruby should be skilled in the art of Lapidary. The rubies are generally molded in four different ways are Step cut or emerald cut, brilliant cut, Mixed cut and Cabochon cut. The rubies are also duplicated as Synthetic Rubies which gives the look but not the originality. The method of creating synthetic rubies is called as Vernen's process. It actually means creating synthetic gems from molten solutions and allowing then to form as boles. Only an expert can distinguish between an original and a synthetic gem. Ruby is the birthstone for July. Rubies from Burma are known for their exception red color. Rubies are mostly found in Myanmar ( Burma ), Sri Lanka. THe worlds most important tub deposits are from a small town namely Mong Hsu in the North-East of Myanmar. Untreated Msong Hsu ruby crystals display two colours purple to black core and bright red. Rubies are also found in Vietnam, near the Chinese border these rubies actually display a slightly purple colour. Other Ruby deposits are located in Northern Pakistan, kashmir, Tadzhiskistan, Laos, Nepal and Afghanistan
Ruby was known as king of gems and it was also the representation for the sun. Ruby was also used as medicine in the olden ages. It was powdered and placed on the tongue and it cured blood diseases, indigestion and it also stopped bleeding.
