Why are colored diamonds rare
The main reason why colored diamonds are not promoted is because they are so rare. De Beers the largest diamond marketer who owns large diamond mines also do not sell these diamonds.
Where are colored diamonds found?
Argyle diamond mine in Australia is the world?s largest and most productive diamond mine. They started the production in 1985. Though their production consists mainly of colorless diamond, colored diamonds form a small portion. Argyle are the largest producers of colored diamonds than all the sources combined together. These colored diamonds are becoming known to the world through marketing done by Argyle.

Colorless Diamonds are measured for the intensity of color on a scale called D-Z Color Scale whereas the yellow diamonds are classified according to their color

Evaluation Criteria of Yellow diamonds
Color:
The yellow diamond is judged based on its color. As the color increases the value of the diamond also increases. Fancy Yellow Diamonds are more common and hence less valuable. Intense Yellow diamonds are rare and so expensive.
Another factor which plays an important part in determining the value is the purity of color. Yellow Diamonds with secondary colors like brownish yellow are less valuable and are priced lower than the single colored diamonds. However Green Yellow diamonds are more rare and hence they are expensive.
Carat Weight
The other factor that determines the value of the diamond is its size or weight. One carat Fancy yellow is more common than five carat Fancy Yellow and hence the value is of the former is less than the latter.
Clarity
Valuation of a yellow diamond is dependent on its clarity. GIA (Gemmological Institute of America) grading standards are used to rate the clarity level. GIA standards for the most beautiful diamond, look for a symmetry grade of excellent (EX), very good (VG), or good (G) for a GIA graded diamond.
Shape
The most ideal cut for the diamond
is the Radiant cut. Radiant Cut was developed by Henry Grossbard. This cut is a
mixture of the Emerald cut and the round cut of diamonds. Yellow diamonds also
look attractive in other cuts like Emerald, Cushion, Oval and Pear Brilliant
Cut.
Cut Quality:
The quality of the cut varies from colored to colorless diamonds. By a combination of proportions which would maximize the saturation of color in the diamond. These diamonds are very different from the colorless ones and hence no comparison can be made.
Why choose a Yellow Diamond?
Yellow Diamonds are not as expensive as citrines, topaz of yellow sapphires. Besides these diamonds possess a unique sparkle which is not available in the other gems. The diamonds are very hard and durable when compared to the sapphires. Hence they are preferred over the other gemstones.
