The act of repairing holes in clothing by hand with a needle and thread or with a sewing machine.

As In:

Edna has darning to do tonight.

Heads Up!

If darning is done carefully and with thread the same color as the material, you will not be able to see where the hole was. Darning is essentially weaving new fabric.
