thaw

Which Means:

To melt, when a frozen liquid returns to a liquid state.

As In:

Image Sadly, Mr. Snowman began to thaw in the spring as the temperature outside became warmer.

Heads Up!

Synonyms for this word are 'defrost' and 'melt'.

cast

Which Means:

To throw something.

As In:

Image The fisherman cast his line into the lake in hopes of catching a big one.

Heads Up!

Cast' also means to make from a mold: Her arm was cast in plaster when it was broken.

Hear It!

hurricane

Which Means:

A strong tropical storm over an ocean with winds over 74 miles (119 km) per hour.

As In:

Image The hurricane caused a lot of destruction.

Heads Up!

Don't forget: a hurricane hurries!

device

Which Means:

An instrument or machine for a special purpose.

As In:

Image They have a special device to examine the throat.

Heads Up!

Don't confuse this word with 'devise', a verb meaning to create: He devised a device.

rotate

Which Means:

To turn, revolve around a center point.

As In:

Image A top will rotate quickly if you spin it.

Heads Up!

Rotate can also mean to take turns: Every day they rotate who washes dishes.
