Congratulations, Kids! You've completed learning the next round of vocabulary words, and now it's time to review.

Hear It!

commotion

Which Means:

A noisy or disturbed situation, an uproar.

As In:

Image There is too much commotion going on at this house!

Heads Up!

The two Ms in this word aren't enough to make a commotion over.

temporary

Which Means:

Lasting for a limited time only, not permanent.

As In:

Image Parking the hot dog trolley here is only temporary.

Heads Up!

The pain created by spelling this word will only be temporary if you practice hard!

meal

Which Means:

The time of day at which food is eaten, usually three times per day.

As In:

Image Ed ate too much of his meal and is now too full to even move!

Which Means:

A person who speaks, especially one who speaks a lot.

As In:

Image Ralphie is a talker--ask him one question and he rambles for an hour!

Add the suffix -er onto a noun or verb and it becomes someone who does that activity: runner, writer, reader, walker, speaker.

host

Which Means:

Someone who greets and shows someone around, or who entertains another.

As In:

Image Who is the host of your favorite game show?

Heads Up!

The O in 'host' is long.

uneven

Which Means:

Not flat or smooth; rough, bumpy.

As In:

Image The uneven ground in the garden made it hard to walk on.

Heads Up!

The prefix UN- makes 'even' not even.

Hear It!

thickness

Which Means:

How wide something is between its two sides or edges.

As In:

Image Fishers have to wait until the ice is a certain thickness before stepping onto a lake in the winter.

Heads Up!

Break the thickness of this word up to make spelling easier: 'thick' and 'ness'.

kowtow

Which Means:

To bow down and worship.

As In:

Image Kahlan goes to the temple to kowtow every morning.

Heads Up!

Kowtow can also be slang meaning to do everything a person asks you to, to never say 'no'.

Hear It!

grip

Which Means:

The act of holding firmly in the hand, or to understand thoroughly.

As In:

Image My baby sister's hand had a strong grip on my finger!

Heads Up!

To make the past tense of this word, add -ped to the end.

Hear It!

reference

Which Means:

The mention of something or someone in a conversation or in writing.

As In:

Image Allen made a reference to another author during his book report.

Heads Up!

You won't need a dictionary reference for this word if you remember it's spelled with all Es.
