Hear It!

residence

Which Means:

The place where a person lives.

As In:

Image A person does not need a fancy residence to be happy.

Heads Up!

The base verb here, 'reside', means 'to live somewhere': Where do you reside?

Hear It!

conundrum

Which Means:

A riddle or puzzle which involves a play on words.

As In:

Image Here is an example of a conundrum: What is black and white and read all over? A newspaper.

Heads Up!

Conundrum' can also mean any confusing puzzle: I'm in a conundrum and am not sure what to do!

galore

Which Means:

In large amounts, plentiful, abundant.

As In:

Image At the party there was food galore!

Heads Up!

The E at the end of 'galore' makes the O long.

Hear It!

aardvark

Which Means:

A medium-sized, burrowing (digging), nocturnal mammal found in Africa.

As In:

Image Also called an anteater, the aardvark eats ants, termites and a type of underground cucumber found in South Africa.

Heads Up!

Aardvarks have such long noses that the beginning of their name has two As.

Hear It!

jamboree

Which Means:

A noisy festival or celebration, often including speeches and entertainment.

As In:

Image To celebrate the new year, the city hosted a big jamboree complete with fireworks.

Heads Up!

Remember the two Es at the end, representing the shouts of glee coming from the party!

bungee

Which Means:

An elastic rope, used for sport jumping from high places.

As In:

Image Stuart longs to bungee jump with his bungee cord.

Heads Up!

A bungee can also be a cord with a hook at each end, used to fasten things securely.

tough

Which Means:

Strong and durable, not easily bent or broken.

As In:

Image Rusty likes to look tough, but he really has a heart of gold!

Heads Up!

The GH in 'tough' has an F sound.

Hear It!

loosened

Which Means:

Made not as tight as before.

As In:

Image The loosened lid fell off and all the salt poured onto Stanley's meal!

Heads Up!

This is a past participial adjective. Its root verb is 'loosen'.

Hear It!

carelessly

Which Means:

Without much thought or attention to detail.

As In:

Image Rich painted carelessly, which resulted in the can of paint dumped all over himself.

Heads Up!

Spelling mistakes are often carelessly made by not paying attention.

Hear It!

scene

Which Means:

A place where something happens, or any view or picture.

As In:

Image This is the scene where the couple got married.

Heads Up!

The SC makes a S sound in 'scene'.
