Hear It!

village

Which Means:

A group of houses smaller than a town, usually in a rural area.

As In:

Image My friends live in a small village near the sea.

Heads Up!

The two Ls in 'village' are the people living in it!

Hear It!

temperature

Which Means:

How hot or cold something is. It can also mean "a fever".

As In:

Image Marsha stayed home because her temperature was 100°. (It should be 98.6°.)

Heads Up!

Look at all of those vowels! It helps to break it into syllables: tem-per-a-ture.

Hear It!

point

Which Means:

A sharp, angled or narrow end.

As In:

Image Carlene likes to sharpen her pencils into a sharp point.

Heads Up!

This word, 'point', is often a verb: Point to the capital of your country on the map!

Hear It!

distance

Which Means:

The amount or length of space between two things.

As In:

Image The clouds stretch into the distance as far as the eye can see.

Heads Up!

Pronounce 'distance' with the stress on the first syllable.

Hear It!

board

Which Means:

A piece of wood that has been sawed thin, and that is much longer than it is wide.

As In:

Image The construction crew will nail each board to the next and make a house.

Heads Up!

Don't be bored with the word 'board'! The difference in spelling should keep you on your toes.
