Hear It!

beet

Which Means:

A root vegetable that is a deep red color and tastes very earthy.

As In:

Image Even the leaves of beets (beet greens) are edible and full of nutrients.

Heads Up!

This beet's root has two Es.

Hear It!

beat

Which Means:

To hit or strike again and again.

As In:

Image To clean the rug, the woman went outside to beat it with a broom.

Heads Up!

See the 'eat' in 'beat'? Sometimes, you can eat what you beat, like eggs or cookie dough.

Hear It!

peak

Which Means:

The highest point, the sharp end or top of anything that comes to a point, like a cone.

As In:

Image Samuel dressed up in a wizard's costume for Halloween with a hat that came to a peak on his head.

Heads Up!

The word 'peak' has an A in it, a letter that has a peak itself.

Hear It!

peek

Which Means:

To take a small, quick look at something from a hidden place.

As In:

Image The child likes to peek from behind the blanket.

Heads Up!

The two Es look like little eyes peeking.

Hear It!

berry

Which Means:

The small fruit of a tree, bush or plant that can often be eaten.

As In:

Image On the raspberry farm, the workers pick each berry carefully so they don't get smashed.

Heads Up!

Cherries are berries.

bury

Which Means:

To dig a hole, put something in it, and cover it back up.

As In:

Image Ben thought it would be fun to bury himself in the sand.

Heads Up!

A clue to remember 'bury' is the U for 'under'.

idle

Which Means:

Not in use or active right now.

As In:

Image When Bernard sits idle for a long time, he gets bored and starts causing trouble.

Heads Up!

End this one in -LE but say it as though it were -el.

Hear It!

idol

Which Means:

Someone who is adored by many, as though he or she were a god.

As In:

Image The movie star is an idol to many young people.

Heads Up!

Maybe one way you can remember the meaning of 'idol' is for the O to represent your open mouth as you gaze upon your idol in awe.

Hear It!

racket

Which Means:

A loud noise or group of noises that is disturbing or confusing.

As In:

Image Father cried, 'What is all that racket outside?' When he looked, he found it was only a goose honking.

Heads Up!

The hard sounding letters of 'racket' make a lot of racket!

Hear It!

racquet

Which Means:

An oval-shaped paddle with a hollow center fitted with tight netting or strings, used to hit a ball or shuttlecock.

As In:

Image Sachi needs a new racquet so she can play tennis.

Heads Up!

The Q in 'racquet' almost looks like a racquet, and you can divide the word into syllables: rac-quet
