Hear It!

costume

Which Means:

A set of clothing that belongs to people in a certain country, time period, or group of people.

As In:

Image Clowns usually wear a very colorful costume!

Heads Up!

Beware that 'costume' has a different spelling from 'custom'.

dock

Which Means:

A pier or short platform where boats are kept when not sailing.

As In:

Image Nick likes to sit on the dock and fish on Saturday mornings.

Heads Up!

Here the O is short because it is followed by a consonant in a one-syllable word.

quote

Which Means:

To repeat part of a book or phrase to support a point.

As In:

Image Stewart likes to quote his favorite authors in his speeches.

Heads Up!

The KW sound is spelled with a 'QU' in 'quote'.

grain

Which Means:

The small hard seed of a food plant, such as in wheat, corn, oats, and rice.

As In:

Image Bread is often made from the wheat grain.

Heads Up!

Usually, where there are two vowels together in a word or syllable, the first one is long, and the second is silent, as in 'grain'.

Which Means:

A secret way to write so that just a few chosen people who also know the secret can understand.

As In:

Image Ships at sea use flags as an international code to other ships; if you see this one, it means "you are running into danger."

The E at the end of code makes the O long.

Which Means:

In a plain, easy, and clear way.

As In:

Image You simply have to put these four ingredients together and you'll have a delicious soup!

There is simply no E in 'simply'!

Which Means:

An attempt, a try, a use of strength or power to achieve a goal.

As In:

Image Rachel made an effort to ride her bike every day to practice for the race.

Heads Up!

Make the effort to include two Fs in 'effort'!

respect

Which Means:

A feeling of the worth or excellence of a person.

As In:

Image In the Asian culture especially, bowing is a sign of respect.

Heads Up!

The K sound in 'respect' is spelled with a C.

Hear It!

fanatic

Which Means:

A person with extreme enthusiasm or excitement about something.

As In:

Image My sister Suzy used to be an Elvis fanatic; she was absolutely crazy about him!

Heads Up!

The C in fanatic has a hard K sound. This word may be shortened to just 'fan'.

Hear It!

random

Which Means:

Chaotic, unsystematic, left to chance.

As In:

Image The letters on the board were arranged in a random order.

Heads Up!

The UH sound in 'random' is spelled with an O.
