Re: But Isn’t Any More?

I’ve probably inveighed tediously on this before, but I get a kick out of “ . . . but both sides are still far apart on key issues . . . .” Gee, methinks, that’s a shame. I thought only one side was far apart. And this, from the San Francisco Chronicle many years ago (I have the clipping somewhere):...

Re: But Isn’t Any More?

Well done! And thanks! But I’ve seen this several times in reference to a living person.

But Isn’t Any More?

How can anyone with even a rudimentary education write
‘. . . was a former . . . .’?

Ironic Misapprehension

I don’t think I ever posted this.
Years ago, I transcribed the following from a BBC news program on NPR:

“ . . . was expelled for ‘activities incompatible with diplomatic status,’ often shorthand for ‘spying.’

Ooh, ooh!
Just read - can’t confirm - that someone had seen
“PPE equipment”.

Suffer no longer.

Accounts vary on which brother commented that . . .

“It’s pretty good, but the spaces between
‘Klick’ and ‘and’ and ‘and’ and ‘Klack’
are not the same.”

I hope that does not disappoint.

Nifty Linguistic Puzzler from “Car Talk”

The lads commission a new sign for the garage:

Klick and Klack’s Auto Repair.

Reviewing the work before mounting it, one of them objects to a small imperfection with a grammatically correct remark containing the same word five times consecutively. (Holy moly!)

And the remark was . . . ?

Ironic example just now heard on NPR: “ . . . they expressed their reticence . . . .”

Re: Fractured Syntax - Platinum Edition

Yeah, I guess meaning is generally clear in these cases. Who’d think “I could care less” means precisely that. Most people aren’t as conscious of language per se as you and I might be. You hear quite intelligent and well-educated people on NPR and PBS make errors, sometimes even in composed text, as...

Re: Blessed Event

Interesting that ‘Grand Old Party’ was first used only about twenty years after the party’s formation. And ‘GOP’ appears about ten years after that.

comme ci, comme ça

I’ve been remembering what must be the perfect appositive epigram. I heard it years ago on Groucho Marx’s TV show You Bet Your Life . It could be German or Yiddish - I believe it would be the same in the two. A woman was responding to Groucho’s inquiry about how things were going. Unter dem Pferd od...

Re: Ever Heard This?

Thanks, bnj. No, I wrote it as it was. And I’m certain there was nothing negative in the intent. Apropos of nothing at all . . . but I just ran across a line I copied from a novel. I think you’ll appreciate this: “ . . . and that if I wasn’t careful, I was courting disaster - or at least asking it o...

Ever Heard This?

Among my mother’s circle in Brooklyn - back in the fifties and sixties - one would say ‘Mention by you’ in response to some kind of congratulations, meaning, I think, ‘May you be similarly blessed’.
Ever heard anything like this?
