Re: Divagate

Forgive my sin, Good Doctor. I saw this entry and immediately assumed that someone had coined a word describing an investigation of scandalous cross-dressing performers or those who behave (wrongly) like spoiled princesses. Mea culpa. Your more literal, pedestrian definition brought me back down nic...

Re: Hootenanny

Nothing like a small town jug band to stir the common soul! I salute you.

Re: Hootenanny

Yes, misterdoe, a gut bucket is an instrument. It's an Appalachian answer to a bass fiddle but intended for strumming /plucking only, not bowing, made of an upside-down galvanized washtub, a broom handle and a piece of rope. Here's one website that gives more information: http://www.jugstore.com/was...

Re: Revenant

We live with the Olympic National Park and its spectacular mountains out the south-facing windows, and the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Victoria BC Canada visible from our north-facing windows - in Port Angeles WA. Nice little lunch-bucket town, with friendly people and incredible beaches, temperate r...

Re: Pogonophilia

Damoge: cést tragique. I trust your unfortunate situation does not drag you down into a perpetual state of identity confusion. Be strong. Pogo would be.

Re: Revenant

Good call, misterdoe. It really is bad form. But it sounds as though you made a face-saving recovery from your instincts. Congratulations.

Re: Funky

I did the Funky Chicken just last weekend, when I was in a funk and needed cheering up. Got pretty funky in the process, but got lots of exercise to make up for it.

Re: Funky

Related is the phrase "in a funk"or "in a blue funk", coined, I believe, about the time the jazz reference of funky was becoming common amongst musicians. It usually meant to be down, or in a quandry or even depressed.

Re: Revenant

Here in the hinterlands, it is obligatory that one be set in one's ways. However, I don't have an eight track player anymore. Congratulations! I must admit that I still have a library of LPs and some cassette tapes that rarely are listened to, and do listen to and occasionally acquire CDs. We have ...

Re: Revenant

Luke and Philip, I suspect that we are kindred spirits. The residents of my floor-to-ceiling bookshelves in the living room/library, the lawyer's cases in the upstairs landing, the bookshelves and piles on the bedside tables are perhaps my wealth, very dear and beloved. No Kindle yet, though friends...

Re: Hero

Thank you for reminding that the use of hero in our culture has evolved unfortunately so that the term is trivialized. I've been privileged to meet two of my heroes: Rosa Parks and Neil Armstrong, both pioneers. I consider myself fortunate to have shaken their hands and told them thank you. I respec...

Re: Revenant

Is there any connection between this Good Word and revive? Although, I suspect not - the latter is closer to re-live, not to be resurrected. Or? Thanks.

Re: Pogonophilia

I remember it well. In my library there live several Pogo collections, and about once every three or four years I get one or two down to refresh my perspectives. I think the closest equivalent to Pogo in today's cartoon commentary is Bloomsbury, but it hasn't the whimsy of Pogo or L'il Abner of past...

Re: Pogonophilia

I believe it was our beloved Pogo who coined the famous quote: "We have met the enemy and he is us." It applies just as much today as it did in the 1950s. I always admired his Everyman's (Everypossum's?) viewpoint on events and politics.

Re: Virtual

I've observed that some equate "virtual"with "actual"or "literal". Perhaps the word to them is associated with "verity" or "verisimilitude"? Any connection there?
