Re: Throe

The etymology reminded me of the Scottish word "thrawn", which the OED defines as follows: thrawn /0θrɔ:n/ adjective. Orig. & chiefly Scot. LME. [ORIGIN from thread noun.] 1 Perverse, contrary; cross-grained, bad-tempered. LME. Listener They're a thrawn, bruised lot, these Le Carré heroes. 2 Twisted...

esconced

This morning a tiny green caterpillar emerged from a rose hip on my desk. It is now esconced in our compost bin. Happily, I hope.

undue

It means more than simply the negative of "due" and it has appeared in definitions before, but not as a word in its own right. Undue neglect?

Best wishes,

Re: Recherche

Greetings and thank you for all the fascinating words that have been coming recently.
Today's is a past participle, recherché, but Recherche in Proust's title is a noun, with no accent.

Lagana contra coronam

I didn't succeed in sending this any other way, so although it's not a new topic, I hope it might bring a smile.

Elbow room is being forced on us now, but I am surprised to hear how the length of the "ell" varies from country to country.

Take care and keep well!

Re: Alternative

I was interested to see the suggested pronunciation for alternate
alternate [awl-têr-nêt].

The COD gives the one I am used to:
alternate /0ɔ:lˈtə:nət, ɒl-/ adjective, adverb, & noun.

A British alternative?

Re: Careen

It was interesting to read that the verb "career" - rush headlong or go swiftly and wildly - is considered obsolete. In this Scottish corner of the woods it is still very common. Neither the OED nor the online Merriam Webster makes any mention of its being obsolete, so I wonder if its obsolescence i...
