Re: Caesura

Yes - to elaborate a bit - the process, of course, is to 'cut' (referred to in the Good Dr.'s Word History) into the mother's uterus to deliver the infant - Julius' supposed method of having been born, but also related to the shape of the scar that it leaves, a rather shallow, but discernable, 'C'. ...

Re: Nay-sayer

And yet - the Greek word 'nai' - pronounced 'neh', rather than 'naee' as some would have it, means 'yes', which makes it far easier to say 'yes' in Greek, than 'no', which is 'oxi', the 'x' as an aspirated 'k' palatal closure, or fricative, of which, there is nothing comparable in the English alphab...

Re: Caesura

I wonder at the pronunciation that is offered. It would seem to have come from early Latin, when there was no letter 'K' in the alphabet, the letter 'C' serving to represent that sound. As well, the vowel combination of 'ae', was pronounced as two sounds, starting with 'ah', and changing to what we ...

Re: Gazette

Thank you for the affirmation. I have relatives who live in the middle of Wyoming, so have had occasion to traverse it, from Cheyenne to Yellowstone, through Buffalo to Gillette and Devil's Tower, around Casper, through Riverton and Lander, along I-80, and along the western edge, from Evanston to Ja...

Re: Gazette

Only the most minor of corrections - I think you meant Billings, Montana, rather than Wyoming. So far, a search on Google Maps has not turned up a Billings, WY.

Re: Are you receiving GWs by e-mail now?

Yes - re-beginning a couple of weeks ago. No need to apologize. Sometimes things just require our attention, no matter whet else we may prefer to do. Glad you're back on the mend.

Re: Sialoquent

Ah, those High School teachers 'Of Old' - a now vanished breed, I fear. One of mine was an early devotee of attending the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in its earliest days, mid-50s. When we read 'Macbeth', which she had just the past summer seen at Ashland, she would often stop, mid-line, and exclaim...

Re: Sialoquent

In the theatre it is often referred to as 'spritzing' or 'schpritzing', a somewhat more onomatopoetic word for the phenomenon, of an actor using 'athletic diction'.

Re: Limerence

Could there be, by chance, a connection to 'limerick' - a poetic form often concerned with love, in its many forms?

Re: Usufruct

The beginning of the word - 'usu' has me wondering about a possible connection with 'usurp' - which generally means to take by force, which implies 'for one's own use'. Is there a connection?
