I've heard her name in countless ways. I don't even think she herself pronounces it as a German would (and she probably doesn't speak German, anyway), and I think that's quite normal, both the ch and the ü in her name being hard sounds to Portuguese speakers.

Is there any other language that does this, if not, why do we do it? And does this make it harder for people to learn to write and read English as a second language? All languages written in the Latin alphabet have cursive and print. But I suppose it can be hard for people whose language is written...

Why?

Anyway, incognito comes from Latin incognitus,a,um, a proparoxytone whose proper accentuation has been preserved in Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan and Romanian.

Certe malus mala malum non est magnum; tamen ego malo mala mala malo malo; tu fortasse malis malis malis malum malum. Are you sure this is the exact quotation? The first line doesn't make much sense. The second and third mean: in the same way I prefer bad apples with a bad tooth; you perhaps prefer...

Makes me think of the idiocies that got published about Russian in the Cold War ("Russian doesn't have a word for peace").

And do they have a word for peace (мир)! It also means world. Talk about a peaceful world!

The word is first recorded in a Latin text from the southern Italian town of Gaeta in 997 AD. Funny, my neighbor pizzaiolo's name was precisely that: Domenico Gaeta. An aptronym? He was from Naples, though. And strangely enough, an Italian slang term for what a shame is che pizza! . Brazilian dude

How about the soon-to-be-unfashionable metrosexual? Close reading of the trend magazines informs those of us who give a crap that butch men are coming back in vogue.
