Re: Agora Font Poll

by Slava » Sun Aug 26, 2012 12:17 am Why? This font is much easier to read, and when words are bolded you can actually see the difference. This is important because the Word of the Day uses bold to signify where the stress is. If people can't see it, what good is it? Hmmm... I'm surprised to see th...

Re: Site Search

by Philip Hudson » Sat Aug 25, 2012 12:03 pm ...I really like the font Trebuchet. It seems that Microsoft has it only in boldface... I think Arial Black is only available in boldface. Trebuchet is definitely available in "regular weight" (jargon?) and in boldface. Now my technical ability...

If the seekers are hopeful when they arrive they surely won't be disappointed by the "datums" which they'll find here.

I guess this should be addressed to the "Webmaster," and, Andrew, I guess that's you. It looks like the Board Index page is the highest level "table of contents" type page in the bulletin board/message board/forum section of the site. It also looks like the "Alpha Agora"...

Re: BERTH

These comments relate to the topic of ship-berthing rather than directly to the word "berth" so I guess they're "off topic." You're forewarned. If you're interested in this non-linguistic topic you may wish to read further. (Where do we draw lines between words and their "re...

Re: CAISSON

by Philip Hudson » Wed Aug 22, 2012 10:54 pm Move Latin "capsa" to Spanish and I think you get “caja”. Caja means box in Spanish... In Spain caja is used to refer to savings banks. Savings bank (Spain) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia In Spain, a savings bank (Spanish: caja de ahorro...

Re: CAISSON

by Slava » Wed Aug 22, 2012 10:51 pm By the by, was it not Abraham Lincoln who held a patent on a camel? An inflatable pontoon-based method of raising boats over shoals, or getting them off sand bars they were stuck on?... The Internet Archive provides an online scanned copy of the Lincoln patent, ...

Re: Forthy

Applying the suffix -ian to "dory" in the same way that one applies the suffix to "library": one who operates a dory is a dorian , one who operates/works in a library is a librarian. I don't usually enjoy puns. They often seem literally to be "lame," i.e. to "walk...

Re: Forthy

Yes, I am suggesting that "dorian" can imply that a person operates only a dory, be it a permanent condition or only temporary, and not another kind of boat. Well, then lemme stir that pot a little more: HOW does the name "Dorian" "imply that a person operates only a dory,&...

Re: Forthy

Perhaps Dorian Seaman is a seaman who operates only a dory, and no other type of boat? Are you saying the name "Dorian" indicates "Only a Dory"? Can you explain that interpretation? (I should explain that I assume The Good Doctor is only human. I don't think each of his puns can...

Technically, the very south of New Jersey is below the Mason Dixon Line. Of course you're right. I remembered that detail when I'd submitted my comment but I decided to "let it fly." I'm glad you like okra. I don't just like it, I LOVE it! I'm glad that Slava noticed my comments in anothe...
