Re: DOPPELGANGER

Words such as DOPPELGANGER and Schadenfreude are imported full blown from other languages - in this case German. The etymology of those words differ in degree if not in kind from PIE rooted words. We could well do without some of them. This also goes for many Yiddish words. But prejudice could play ...

Re: Antimacassar

We have them. Doesn't everyone? Arm rest sleeves too. My office chair is shedding its skin. It falls on the floor in small black strips. It needs help. Perhaps I need a new one.

Re: Protuberant

David, I was writing in humor. I guess I am mega-old. The 98 pound weakling was a part of an advertisement for a body builder. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Atlas I have never weighed 98 pounds as an adult. I am or was 6' 2". I have shrunk some in my dotage. My weight has been up to 230...

Re: Protuberant

Very recently I tripped on the threshold of my workshop and fell headlong on my face -- to a concrete floor. My left eye is the opposite of protuberant, it being surrounded with swollen and blackened flesh. I discussed this on Facebook and got 56 comments. Some were even kind and sympathetic.

Re: Engagé

I am interested in the statement that "Britishers attempt to imitate the French." Isn't this usually the other way around with Americans trying to imitate the sound of the word in the original language? Consider the two words carriage and garage. As I understand it, since carriage came to us via Eng...

Apophenia puts me in mind of the Peanuts cartoon in which Charlie Brown and his friends are looking for patterns in the clouds. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikTSDhMRTOs

Re: KETCHUP

There is a big difference in condiments of choice between Southerners and Northerners. Ketchup can be eaten with fried potatoes but that is about as far as it goes here in the hinterlands. Then there is the big divide between the heavy taste of mayonnaise and the more piquant Kraft Miracle Whip. I d...

What was your instrument Dr. Goodword? I played oboe baritone sax and drums in high school and college. I was not the best instrumentalist. Tex Beneke kept the band afloat for a while after Miller died. You can hear his band at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfFthmUUzvI Neil Darnell, who was choirm...

Re: Calender

And then there is colander. A perforate bowl for straining food. I can't imagine cooking without one. And I do cook whenever the mood strikes me. My dear wife wishes I would get in the mood more often. That reminds me of one of my favorite musicians, Glenn Miller. He played a number called "In the M...
