Re: Hustings & prorogue

Welcome to the Agora, Jan! I'd forgotten prorogue, and even tried to pronounce it to rhyme with rogue. It turns out I suggested it once before, in 2006!

Keep on posting! :D

Cog

As in the tooth on a gear. Or the railway up Mt. Washington.

Re: Sarcopenia

The second part is penury, too.

Anthropophagus sarcophagus. I like it, but it appears the first word is a noun, not an adjective.

Re: Corny

We could have an entire library devoted to the etymology of slang. I wonder if corny as in corn-ish or corn-like really is related to the goofy definition.

Re: cliché

I looked, but it appears this word has not had its own treatment yet. I'll suggest it again here. I am working my way through a book on clichés right now. It is amazing to me what is considered a cliché. Sadly, the author did not provide a definition, so I find myself quibbling with it a lot. It's T...

Re: Alternative spellings

barbecue/barbeque - I think I like the 1st, though both work for me. doughnut/donut - definitely the 1st. mike (microphone)/mic - despise the second. fair (market)/fayre* - are the Brits going back to the olde days? fare (food)/fayre* - I don't get why you'd make two different words indistinguishabl...

Re: Cachexy

I'd say that pellagra might be a result of cachexy, not a synonym.

A good one to add to blither, as in "a mithering, blithering idiot."

Feculent

full of dregs or fecal matter; foul, turbid, or muddy.

A nice hidden way of insulting someone. Instead of "full of ****", they can simply be feculent.

Not really a great Good Word, but I liked it enough to share.

I only just found out that this is from a mallow plant that grows by a marsh. Fun.

Re: mudita

Interesting word. I'd say we could use a bit more of it in our world.

Where does the stress fall, though?
